Children go to school to learn. Student misbehavior is a teaching opportunity. Children of ages 4, 5, 6 and 7 should not be suspended from school for making mistakes.
Out-of-school suspension is a counterproductive method of discipline for students of any age. It is especially egregious when used on our youngest students. And it has been used excessively.
It is shameful that a Black child is seven times more likely to be suspended than a non-Black child in New Hanover County, even for very young students age 4-7.
As a first step the New Hanover County Schools must change their discipline policy so that suspensions will not be used as a consequence for 4, 5, 6, and 7-year old children.
Sign the petition to end out-of-school suspensions for 4, 5, 6, and 7-year-old children.
